There is a saying from Asia I heard. When I share it, people from China say it is Chinese, people from Japan say it is Japanese, people from Korea say it is Korean, people from Vietnam say it is Vietnamese. The saying is “A journey of a thousand miles begins with a single step”. I took that single step many years ago when I gave my life to Jesus. The thing about a journey is that you never know what will happen in the future. Before I gave my life to Jesus, my life was only about ME. My hero was Gordon Gecko in the movie Wall Street who said “greed is good”. I had an encounter with Jesus in July 1989 when He made His presence very real to me. The next morning I drove to Holmes Lake in Lincoln and while reading John 21 in the bible gave my life to Jesus for His service.
Since that time the journey has had many highlights but also some difficult times. I have traveled to other countries and shared Jesus. I have gone from being a greedy selfish businessman to a low income ESL teacher/part-time missionary. I would have to say I am much happier now than I was before. My life is so much fuller now than it was before. I have friends from several countries and have experienced their cultures. I have had the privilege of praying with people from many countries as they came to know Jesus. My adventurous journey is not what everyone is called to follow.
However, we can all experience the greatest joy there is- A personal relationship with God through Jesus. He knows our future. He knows us better than we know ourselves and if we trust Him, He will guide us to what fulfills us. It is not always easy. At times it is hard, but it is worth it. My journey continues. I do not know where it will take me in this life. I do know it will end with me in heaven with Jesus because He paid for my sins when He died on the cross. i do not deserve His forgiveness of to be such an incredible journey. I am grateful to be on it though.
