The disciples asked Jesus to each them how to pray. He gave them a model of how to pray. It is ironic to me that in the Church I grew up in we repeated the prayer every Sunday but no one smiled. In fact it seemed like it was just empty repetition. Jesus told the disciples to not just repeat words before He gave them a model to follow.
The first words Jesus taught them were “Our Father”. When I think about this, it still fills me with wonder. God reveals Himself as Father. Father is a relationship word. We begin prayer in relationship with God. Jesus constantly called God Father in front of His disciples. He said to them many times- “Your Father in Heaven”.
Could I encourage you to come back to the simplicity of prayer today? That prayer is talking with God who is Father. Do not worry about having the big words. Do not worry about having the ritual correct. Come back to the simplicity of God is Our Father who wants to hear from you. He already knows everything. He wants us to come to Him and tell Him, so we grow in our relationship with him.
